Our museum took delivery of a DC-7 in the last month or so. This aircraft originally served Delta and still wears a paint job that is similar to the airline’s pre-widget paint scheme. Most recently it served as a fire bomber. It is at our hangars to get painted. She’s a little rough, but I dig the patina.

What’s with the plastic over the windows? Are the windows just gone? Any plans to refurb the interior, or is this going to be an exterior only museum piece?

I’d hazard a guess and say the windows are masked prior to painting, always a tedious but necessary task.

Heard rumors that the original first class lounge at the back is intact.  Should be awesome when done - is it getting the “Golden Crown” livery or the Widget?

Definitely doesn’t look like masking:

Covers a lot more than the window area.

I think they will stick with the crown.

I think they are removed in prep for painting. The tape and plastic will be removed once it is pulled in.

Did the DC-7s ever get painted with a widget?   Or did they keep the old livery until retired?

I’m not sure. The Widget  originated on the DC-8. I don’t think any of DC-7 were repainted in that scheme.
